Spare tire question

Hi ....Just got my Hummer last week and am thinking about adding the rear spare carrier. Does anyone who has one know from the rear of the vehicle to the outside of the spare what the distance is? I'm afraid it may outsize my garage space. Also have seen them on Ebay for about $650 versus the dealers cost. How hard is it to install i.e any specialty tools or knowledge required to do it? Thanks for your help folks ...*lovin my Hum*;)

Not sure about total distance but installing a tire carrier is very easy. The SMA one mounts on the rear tow hooks. All you have to do is remove and replace the two bolts. Make sure to grease up the hinge. I skipped this at first and had to go back later and do it. A must. Wiring up the new license plate light is fairly simple and the only wiring issue. All in all a simple project.

I just went out and measured mine. The tire sticks out an additional 14 inches from the bumper. The mounting of the tire carrier also requires the drilling and tapping of two holes on the hinge side, in addition to removeing and replacing the four tow loop bolts. Just go down to Sears and buy the correct size drill bit and tap. The instructions lay the whole operation out.:cheers

THE DAY I BOUGHT MY H2 A LADY WAS AT THE DEALER TO HAVE HER CARRIER TAKEN OFF..PAIN IN THE BUTT AND BLOCKS PART OF REAR VIEW.I SOLVED THE PROBLEM BY TAKING OUT THE SPARE AND STORING IT.WE TOOK A ROAD TRIP AND I LAID IT (SECURED) IN THE BACK..I CAN'T IMAGINE GETTING A REGULAR TYPE FLAT. IF SO, I'LL FIX THE FLAT OR GET THE SPARE FROM STORAGE.
